Nigerian Fashion: The Evolution of Igbo Anklet

 The Igbo culture is very unique, from its delicacies, the language, songs, virtues, and most especially attires. There are so many aspects of the Igbo complete attire but today we take a look at the evolution of the Igbo anklet.

The Igbo anklet could seem insignificant sometimes as it is placed at the ankle, yet it is one of the most important items in their dress-up. This anklet signifies fertility, prestige elegance, and purity. These are some of the virtues a woman is meant to have in the Igbo culture.

 Dating back to the pre-colonial era, the traditional anklet was in brass form and called Ogba. Worn by ladies from the most prestigious families in the tribe; it was a symbol of fortune and luxury.

The change came to this exquisite piece of the Igbo fashion in the colonial era. The modern ways of life introduced by the British changed the form of the anklet to a smaller size with the use of beads, yet it did not lose its significance.

The Igbo anklet is still worn to this day along with other traditional outfits.
