Does Nigeria have a Education System?

During the recession in Nigeria, severe cuts have been made in public funding which has affected government services nationwide. Within the education sector, the existing situation has increased. Within today’s climate with what’s going in the world alongside a pandemic, plus the issue with police brutality.

I’m sure we can remember that not long ago that young people and students were protesting in Nigeria to eliminate SARS and end police brutality. However, are student protests new in Nigeria? Let’s not forget the several protests and strikes that took place at Nigerian universities and secondary schools due to education being highly underfunded.  With the level of corruption going on in Nigeria and the lack of democracy in Nigeria, I mean are we surprised that education in Nigeria is divided into countless off problems.

With the issues of poor funding, poor school facilities, insufficient classrooms, teaching materials (computers, projectors, libraries), lack of quality teachers especially inadequate/polluted learning environments. Also let’s not forget the level of corruption within education, are we given children and young adults a chance when there’s a level of corruption within the education system? The education system in Nigeria has many flaws including examination malpractice and cultism.

What do you think needs to be changed? Personally, I think for change to happen within the education in Nigeria the government need to reassess the education system and acknowledge the lack of funding and equipment in schools.  It should not come down to whether you’re in public/private education the level of education should lack necessities that are needed or the amount of money your parents have in their bank accounts. As education is important to many Nigerians shouldn’t everyone at least gets an equal amount of education as others.  Education should be affordable for all and for those who cannot afford it systems need to be put into place. The current monolithic approach must be changed.
