Nigerian Tradition: Egungun Festival

Egungun Festival.

In Yorubaland, the Egungun festival is a very important event that is celebrated annually and this practice has been passed down from generations to generations. The Egungun are believed to be the spirit of the departed ancestors, who sometimes want to revisit the human community for blessings, remembrance, celebration and punishment to their enemies.
The costumes of the Egungun is very colourful and expensive fabrics which are both locally woven and industrially manufactured. Africans in the diaspora especially in Barbados, Brazil, Dominican Republic and Cuba practice and celebrate the Egungun events in a bid to retrace their root. The festival goes on for days with drumming and dancing by attendees who accompany the Egungun whilst the Egungun display acrobatic dance in spirit motion.
