Nigerian Instrument: Ìyáàlù Bàtá Drum

  ìyáàlù bàtá

For at least 5-6 centuries, the Iyaalu (mother) bata drum has been the largest set of drums used by the Yoruba tribe to praise, convey messages and represent their gods e.g. Sango, Oya, Ogun etc through musical tones.

It's a double-headed drum with an hourglass shape which comes in different sizes.
Today we can see the bata drum playing a huge role in secular and church music. It is also adored and played by Africans in diasporas like Cuba, Puerto Rica and the USA.
