Who is Queen Moremi Ajasoro?
When talking about heroic women, Queen Moremi Ajasoro tops the list. She hails from Offa and was married to Oranmiyan. Moremi was a selfless, beautiful and a very brave woman who is very well recognised for her great works all across the Yoruba community.
Around the 12th century, in the history of Ile-Ife Osun State Nigeria, there was a war that took place with the neighbouring tribe, the Igbo "Forest people" (but not the present Igbo of South-East Nigeria). Oramiyan being the king at that time became troubled, nervous and worried about the constant raiding and killing by the Igbo's (Forest People). This made his wife Moremi reflect on a course of action to bring back her husband's happiness and also restore peace to Ile Ife people.
Moremi finally arrived at a plan. She visited the "Esimirin the spirit river" wanting a reveal to the secret of the neighbouring tribe's tactics. She vowed to make the greatest sacrifice if she can grant her wish. Esimirin advised Queen Moremi to allow herself to be captured whenever the Igbo raiders come again. Moremi being a beautiful woman, the next time the "Forest people "came, she was taken as a prisoner of war.
Queen Moremi being a skilful and confident woman, she won the affection and trust of the Igbo people and married their King. She familiarized herself with the secrets of their army and got to know that the "Raffia Palm' was the major tool used by the Igbo people to disguise and make themselves invisible when attacking Ile-Ife. She waited for the golden opportunity and escaped back to her husband (Oranmiyan) in Ile-Ife armed with the information. She conveyed this privileged information to the King and Elders and this was used to eventually defeat the Igbo people.
Till this day, the Yoruba tribe respect and celebrate the life of Moremi for her bravery. She has been immortalized in different ways. Queen Moremi's Statue of Liberty is the Fourth tallest in Africa and Tallest in Nigeria.
