What Do You Know About "OBA" (Shango's First Wife)

What do you know about "OBA" (Shango's First Wife)

Oba or Obba in the Yoruba religion is traditionally known as the first wife of Sango (god of thunder and lightning), and one of the daughters of Yemoja.

Oba is said to be the Orisha of the River with a story which narrates how she cut off her ear for husband(Sango) to eat when he was back from war with Ogun. She actually did that following the advice of Oya or Oshun (Shango's other wives)who told her to do it for Sango her husband to love and adore her more.

When Sango found out about the cutting of the ear for a meal. In anger, he sent Oba out his house on exile. Oba left Sango's presence and became the Obba River we know today. Though there have been different myths and stories behind the Oba's ear saga. Some Myth in Cuba believes Oba cut off her 2 ears freely from her mind to feed Sango when they run out of goats.

The Oba river originates from Igbon but during the 19th-century war, the worship centre for Oba was moved down to Ogbomosho. The Oba river flows through Iwo, the main reason why Iwo children are called  Iwo Olodo Oba children.
