Obi Abata is a cash crop which prides its origin from West Africa, Nigeria. Due to the slave trade in the past, it found its way to other places like Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Brazil, West Indies and some parts of South America. The caffeine in the nuts is much larger than 2 cups of American coffee. Most popular energy drinks like Pepsi, Coca Cola, Dr Pepper are made from the kola extract.
Obi Abata plays an important cultural symbol for most ethnic groups in Nigeria. It is offered to guest at funerals, child dedication and weddings ceremonies and also play a vital role in welcoming visitors to the community or traditional meetings. The nuts can be eaten raw and the colour varies in red, purple and pink. Its has a bitter flavour that is accompanied by a nice and rosy aroma when chewed.

Obi Abata is mainly used for divination or offerings to the Orisha and ancestors when the four or five lobes are split open in accordance to the Yoruba religion.
