Babalawo

Babalawo

Babalawo is a servant, mouthpiece and representation of the Orisa Orunmila(Grand Priest) who communicate with the Ifa concerning their clients future in the Yoruba Religion/Tradition. They also act as an intermediary between the living in the "Upper World" and the living at the "Lower world".

"Baba-ni-Awo" means the Father in the knowledge of things material and spiritual. They prepare medications, invoke spiritual forces and also a redeemer from the evil spirits of their clients. Being able to master the cabalistic and ritualist of Ifa is the main purpose and work of Babalawo.

One needs to understudy and learn from experienced Babalawo who will passes down their Oral lecture of the heritage to the initiate. The training can take up to 20yrs to be accomplished but there is endless learning in becoming a good Babalawo. A good Babalawo must have a worthy character people can emulate and should never be in conflict with any other tradition or religion. Their purpose in life is to help their clients attain their highest destiny by discovering their purpose and will from Orunmila who is second in command to Olodumare.
