Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome  a.k.a  'Fela Kuti"


Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti  a.k.a Fela Kuti was born on the 15th October 1938 and died 2nd August  1997.

He was a Nigerian Multi-instrumentalist, composer and political activist. He fought the government and its cabinets with his music and solid lyrical content during his lifetime.

During his childhood, Fela learnt how to play the drums and piano. This gave him an edge which led to him becoming the leader of a school choir. He left Nigeria for London in the '50s to study music at Trinity College but told his parents he going there to study medicine to become a medical Doctor.

He founded the Egypt 80  band in 1960 and they created a style of music called "Afrobeat's". The sound is a mixture of calypso, salsa, funk, and indigenous Yoruba and pidgin language. Fela has about 50 albums under his belt.

The son of the popular women's right activist Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti married about 27 women on the same day around 1978 but later divorced them all due to personal reason one of which was jealousy. His first wife Remi Kuti gave birth to Fela's first son Femi Kuti and other 2 daughters. Fela was a polygamist during his lifetime which blessed him with an abundance of children.

On the 2nd day August 1997 around when Fela was 58 years old, he died of AIDS. He was buried at Tafawa Balewa square which had many fans in attendance. 

He was buried at his Kuti's residence Kalatuta in Ikeja Nigeria.
