Gele ( Head Tie )


Gele is commonly worn among women in parts of West Africa and Southern Africans too.

Head tie commonly knowns as Gele in the Yoruba language as different names in most countries. Its called Duku in Malawi, Tukwi in Bostwana etc.


Gele is a sign of social respect for women in Nigeria. In the olden days, a young child "Gele" in Yorubaland tied at the front, which means our future is ahead.



The middle age tied their gele at the side, which also means they at the stage of getting married and start a family.  The old women tied their Head tie at the back, which means the sun has set for them.
