What Do You Know about Your History ? - Eyo Festival a.k.a (Adamu Orisha Play)

Eyo Festival a.k.a (Adamu Orisha Play)

Eyo festival also knowns as the "Adamu Orisha Play" is a full week unique festival that holds on Lagos Island.
History informed us that the Eyo festival is always held to escort an important soul e.g A king or chief. It can also be used to welcome the new King to his reign.

The first Eyo festival in Lagos was held on 20th February 1845 to celebrate Oba Akintoye's life. Eyo festival can also hold if the tradition demands it, which makes its one of the most powerful and respected festival in Yoruba land.

Though the festival has lost most of its worshipers and followers to the Islamic, and Christianity religion but this does not stop the Eyo festival from attracting tourists as well as generate revenue for the government and Lagos state.

The Eyo consist of 5 groups.

“The Adieu” will go out with the staff which means the festival will hold the following Saturday (they are identified by black, broad-rimmed hat) The remaining four groups, "Laba”(Red) “Oniko”(Yellow) Ologede (Green) and “Agrere”(Purple) will turn to parade from Monday-Thursday of the festival.

The last time the Festival was held was 20th May 2017 which was done to celebrate Lagos state at 50 years old.

Items not allowed at the Eyo festivals are:

- Women are not allowed to wear a shoe or tie headscarves.

- Plaiting of Suku hairstyle is prohibited

- No smoking around the Festival

- No riding of bicycle or motorcycle

If any of the above is violated, the masquerades will beat the violator(s) with their staff.
