Age Factor

I was once turned down for a management position because of my age, I had all the necessary qualifications and all the key competencies the organization was after. A close family friend that knew someone in the organization reached out to inform me that they considered me for the role, but they said I was too young for the position.

Obviously, I was shattered but soon after, I realized age matters in Nigeria. A lot of organizations do not care if you are the most qualified, they just want someone that falls into a certain age bracket because they believe the individual can meet the deliverable.

This obviously is not the right mode of selection for a role or business opportunity, in some instances age matters for adequate number of years of experience but when the reasons are trivial like, "Ah, she is too young o". I think that is age bias, partiality that prevents objective consideration of a person because of their age. This is also known as Ageism/Agism, stereotyping and/or discrimination against individuals or groups based on their age.

Have you ever been rejected for a role because of your age?
