The Lijadu Sisters, Do You Remember Them?

 

Of the array of Nigerian musicians we have witnessed over the years, but the Lijadu sisters stood out during their active year, they took the spotlight during the times when men subdued the music industry timeless lyrics, amazing rhythm, and girl power was what people would feel once they decide to listen to their songs. The sisters made history and equally made recognition for Nigeria in the International phrase.

In this article, I will list out a few things that can help refresh your memory about who the Sisters are. 

1) The Lidaju sisters (Taiwo & Kehinde Lijadu)  are twins, in fact, if you can remember vividly they are identical twins. they would sing alike, look alike, and dress alike, this was one of the things that attracted the public to them. 

2) The twins were born on the 22nd of October in the year 1948, in the city of Jos. Their parents are Mr Funsho Edmund a photojournalist, and pianist and Mrs Efunyemi Adelaide Lidaju, a seamstress, vocalist, and harmonist. 

3) The twin had their parents to thank for the inception of their musical career. According to an interview they once granted, they mentioned how they grew up listening to high-class international, local music, which helped them with their style of music and how they satisfied their audience both locally and internationally. 

4) The sisters began singing during the late 50s, they believe that they have begun to harmonize right when they were younger, but they began to sing publicly in the 50s. Even as they started singing at a young age, they released their first album in the year 1969 and titled it Iya Mi Jowo. the album was such a success. 

5) After their first the sisters went on to create more albums and several amazing songs. They tried not to stick to just one style of music, they explored different genres, fuji, R&B, Reagge, Pop, Afrobeat, and many more genre that were brave enough to explore.                                                                                                                                                                  

6) Although the sisters were active in the industry for only 25years, they went on to sing and share their stories and adventures for all who cared to listen.

7) On the 9th of November in the year 2019, Kehinde Lijadu passed away, in the same apartment, she shared with her twin. she aged 71years old.
