Nigerian Tradition: Argungu Fishing Festival ( Largest Fishing festival in Africa)

Argungu Fishing Festival

The Argungu fishing festival is a four-day annual festival which is a way of life for the people of Kebbi State, North, Nigeria. The festival was created for the purpose of fishing, unity and entertainment in 1934, to mark the era of old hostility between the Kebbi Kingdom and Sokoto Caliphate.
Argungu is a town in Kebbi state and the river serves as a source of irrigation for their crops and source of food. The Argungu Emirate is the home for the largest fishing festival in Africa.

The final day for the festival ends with the "Race to Fish" competition where thousands of fishermen will line up along the river to catch the biggest fish. They jump into the river at the sound of gunshots. The winner can go home with as much as $7000-8000 US dollars.
