Clogged Milk Ducts (Causes,Treatment and Prevention)


Clogged or Plugged Ducts 

- Is the main cause of pain for nursing mothers in which the milk duct is constricted with milk backing up behind that point leading to swelling or discomfort. 

Mothers with this challenge feel a kind of tender lump due to milk becoming thicker and harder to flow

Causes

- Poor fitting bra
- Skipped or Infrequent feeding
- Oversupply
- Bad sleeping position
- Pressure on duct
- Fatigue
- Dehydration

Treatment & Prevention
- Stay hydrated, drink water regularly
- Massage gently occasionally
- Feed your baby more often
- Try different feeding position
- When wean (or withdrawing and introducing feeding bottle and other types of feeding), do it slowly
-  Before feeding warm compress after feeding cold compress

See A Doctor When

-
It last more than 48hrs
- Redness and warmth is observed
- Milk contains pus, mucus or blood
- There is feeling fever
- Sore or cracks are observed
